Full course

The Media Design Master is a fundamental investigation into the nature of media systems and the practices which bring them together with the social, aesthetic and political aspects of life. As such, we expect to draw students from a range of experiences and perspectives.

A Bachelor in Communication Design, Interaction Design, Information Design or a related field would equip you with some of the key skills and approaches useful in beginning the course. You may also have gained experience and insight into digital media through working practice after having graduated in another subject. We also welcome strong applications from graduates of Cultural Studies, Media Studies, Fine Art, various Humanities disciplines, Computer Science and other related areas.

Candidates for the study programme are interested in developing their work through experiment as well as critical reflection on the technical, cultural and social implications of an information society. They are able to formulate questions for exploration through independent research, and are ready to engage in collaborative projects, dialogue and joint research.

Project Participants

It is possible to attend a Thematic Project for one trimester as a guest participant. Project participation is principally open to anyone – after an informal review of a prospective participant’s motivation and portfolio -, and does not entail the status of an enrolled student. Places for project participants are limited.

Other Requirements

All participants are expected to be computer literate, and should be eager to engage in further training in the programming, use and development of information systems as an integral part of their work.

English is our working language and proficiency in both speaking and writing is required.

Alongside the material required for your application, we ask you to send in a sample assignment:

“Produce a map of a medium and the relations it forms with other social, political, philosophical, economical or aesthetic systems.”

The sample assignment can be realized in any form you find useful.

The purpose of the sample assignment is:

  • for students, particularly those coming from various disciplinary backgrounds, to show their engagement with ideas and materials of the programme;
  • to show a complex understanding of media, and do something with that complexity;
  • to give you the opportunity of a critical investigation of media while practically (and perhaps experimentally) using the media tools – whether graphic design, essay writing, video, sound, website or any other means – that you excel at.
