If you recognise that the future of digital media lies in the proliferation of new forms of hybrid practices the Master Media Design and Communication will be a stimulating environment for your research, and a supportive context for your development as an inventive creator of distinctive image, sound and text based projects.

Our programme focuses on practice-led research through project-based work, always in tandem with theoretical exploration of related topics. Since media systems and aesthetic criteria do not exist in a historical, cultural or political vacuum, part of your studies is to situate communication technologies and image systems within these frameworks.

To facilitate the development of you own individual research path, the Master programme has two specialisation routes: Networked Media and Lens-Based Media.

For the Networked Media route all students are expected to be skilled computer and internet users, and should be willing to engage in further training in the programming of information systems.

The Lens-Based Media route focuses on approaching animation, digital photography, and the cinematic image as a single expanded field. You will be encouraged to develop fluency across the whole range of lens-based media.)

In addition to your work on Research Methodologies and Media Strategies we provide intensive seminars, technical prototyping and tutorial support within these specialisations.

Research Methodologies Seminars and Thematic Seminars will encourage you to research and explore a range of media strategies along analytical axes: axes that allow you to identify, and creatively control, the way any given work might use its relation to time, its interaction with the viewer/user, or its creation of pictorial space, to engage an audience and address pressing contemporary topics.

The programme comprises six study trimesters. Within the first four trimesters, in addition to your self-directed research projects, you are supported by thematic seminars, technical prototyping sessions, and research methodologies seminars. The last two trimesters you focus on your individual graduation project with individually tailored tutorial support. Next to the staff tutors, we invite international practitioners and theorists as guest lecturers and tutors.
