Since the early 1980s, Diedrich Diederichsen has been extremely influential as a pop culture critic and is considered one of Germany’s most prominent art theorists and political thinkers. As a public intellectual, he crosses the boundaries of journalism, criticism, art and cultural studies. A recurring issue in his writing is how pop and subculture can lead to ‘dissidence’ and critical thinking. His work is published regularly in magazines, including Texte zur Kunst, Theater heute, Jungle World, and Artforum, and in newspapers such as Die Zeit, Tagesspiegel and Tageszeitung. His most recent publication is “On (Surplus) Value in Art”, published by Witte de With in 2008. Other books include: “Musikzimmer: Avantgarde und Alltag. Mit großer Diskographie” (2005), “Personas en loop: Ensayos sobre la cultura pop” (2005), “Argument Son – De Britney Spears à Helmut Lachenmann: Critique electroacoustique de la société” (2007), and “Eigenblutdoping. Künstlerromantik und Selbstverwertung: Selbstverwertung, Künstlerromantik, Partizipation” (2008). Diederichsen was editor of the German music magazines Sounds (1979-1983) and Spex (1985-1990) as well as the book “Golden Years: Dokumente und Materialien zur queeren Subkultur 1959-1974″ (2004).
